Amidst the Karnataka hijab controversy, a hearing was held in the High Court today and the matter will be heard tomorrow as well. Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has imposed section 144 in Tumkur from 6 am till further orders. This order has been issued because schools have been opened in the state from February 16.
Colleges open from 16 February
Tumkur DC said that this order will be applicable up to 200 meters radius of other college premises including degree colleges. Significantly, the government had closed schools and colleges in the midst of the hijab controversy, but they are being reopened after the order of the court. From February 14, the school was opened for girls from class 1-10 and now colleges are being opened from February 16.
Hijab is a symbol of faith and not of religious fanaticism
Appearing for Muslim girl students in the Karnataka High Court against the ban on hijab, her lawyer said that wearing hijab is a symbol of her faith and not a display of religious bigotry. He also urged the full bench of the High Court to allow girl students to attend classes wearing hijab. He said that the court has suspended their fundamental rights by banning the hijab till the completion of the hearing. Significantly, Muslim girls have challenged the February 5 order of the Karnataka government, in which students were prohibited from wearing such clothes which can disturb peace, harmony and law and order.
Girls did not get admission in schools for wearing hijab
Schools are open in Karnataka from Monday 14 February, the controversy over the hijab continued from day one. On Monday, there was an argument between the management and the parents in many schools and many parents took their daughters back, while many took off the hijab and went to the school. Today a girl left the examination after not being allowed to enter the class wearing a hijab. Angry parents of the girl students were seen arguing with the school administration and the police. At the same time, there is also a report of waving saffron scarves in a school today, while no such incident was reported on Monday.
